“I Need A Larger Home” – Really?

August 21, 2011

Yesterday, I went to the Ikea storeĀ in Charlotte. While I can always spend hours walking around their showroom getting new ideas, I was particularly intrigued by the “Small Spaces” displays.

One display built out a 780 sq. ft. home for 3 people. Another, a 350 sq. ft. apartment for a couple. It was really interesting to see how every inch of space was planned and used wisely.

A common trend in these spaces was “going up”. For example, shelving and cabinets that extend to the ceiling. Also, using loft beds which allow for living space underneath.

Americans are known for liking things big. We are a society of big cars, super size meals and large homes. I often hear people talk about needing a larger home to hold all their stuff. To me, that seems silly. Why spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for more space to hold, perhaps, a few thousand dollars worth of “stuff”?

Take a look at Ikea-USA.com/smallspaces and be inspired; and happy with the space you’re in.
